Crowns (Caps)

A crown technically is something that covers or encases an entire tooth surface while also restoring the tooth to its proper size and shape, and a crown is also something that helps to strengthen all forms of tooth structure and cannot be restored with things like fillings and other common forms of dental restorations.

Although there are many types of crowns the most common is porcelain because it is a tooth colored crown. Crowns are always going to be extremely durable and will last a patient many years, but of course they may need to be replaced just because it is not necessarily a permanent fix to your dental ailment. Porcelain caps are made to look identical to the other teeth in your mouth so it looks very natural and helps you to really get that beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.

Reasons for getting crowns:

  • Your teeth are fractured/broken
  • It’s a great cosmetic enhancement for your teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Fillings could be fractured
  • You need a larger filling as you grow
  • Root canal

What does the procedure of getting a crown involve?

When you get a crown you are more than likely going to have to go through two different appointments to finish the procedure. The first appointment includes the dentist creating a whole bunch of molds so that these can then be replicated to make a custom crown that is perfect for you. The mold is also going to be useful before you get your permanent crown because it will allow you to have your temporary crown for two weeks after the second appointment while your crown is manufactured in a dental laboratory.

Your tooth will be numbed and the dentist will then prepare the tooth removing all signs of decay and making sure that the tooth surface will properly fit the new crown. After this is implemented the dentist will check your bite to make sure everything is going smoothly with your biting techniques with your new or temporary crown.

The second appointment will include your tooth being cleaned, the removal of the temporary crown and the implementation of the new crown that will be the one you live your life with into the future to ensure a healthy and pretty smile.
